Campaign Overview

For more than ten years now, the results of the 1990 elections in Burma which swept the National League for Democracy led by Aung San Suu Kyi to victory have been ignored.

Few regimes in the world today are more repressive than the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) in Burma. In 1988, there was a bloody military crackdown on the democracy movement. In Burma today, opposition and dissent is brutally crushed, civil organisations such as trade unions suppressed, forced labour and forced relocation is nationwide.

The International Union Campaign
Unions worldwide, through bodies such as the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) have repeatedly condemned the military regime for its widespread abuse of human rights and for ignoring the results of the 1990 elections. The widespread and systematic use of forced labour has drawn particular condemnation.

The Union Aid Abroad Campaign
In 2002 - 2003, Union Aid Abroad is conducting a major campaign to support these international calls for an end to forced labour in Burma. This site will be updated and expanded regularly as the campaign progresses.
