Introduction for Teachers

The Burma Education Resource presents you with a number of ideas and issues inspiring a variety of lessons dealing with key issues of human rights in Burma. It will encourage students’ awareness and understanding of the many complex issues facing the country today. The political climate in Burma constantly changes, and many hope to see significant change towards democracy sooner rather than later. Therefore, use of this Resource Pack should be complemented with materials on any current developments in the country.

This Burma Educational Resource Pack is primarily levelled at secondary school students, but can be adapted to tertiary and primary levels as well. Suggestions about what you found useful in the Resource Pack are welcome. Please send us an e-mail including your comments and suggestions as you work through the materials.

Objectives

The Burma Education Resource Pack aims to:
· Encourage students' awareness and understanding of current issues in Burma
· Stimulate action concerning this and other human rights issues, and the sharing of new knowledge with others
· Develop reading, writing, research, verbal and analytical skills enabling students to think critically about complex human rights issues

General Assignments

The Resource Pack provides questions and activities for students in order to stimulate your own ideas.

1. Structure assignments and exams on any of the topics as in-class, timed, homework, group work, comprehension, research project, essay, short answer, multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank or pop quiz.

2. To develop reading skills, read and analyse articles from journals, magazines and newspapers on any of the topics. Read and review a book or watch a documentary, film, video or television program and review it.

3. To facilitate research skills, complete an assignment on any of the topics involving the library, internet, news, current events, statistical analysis, data analysis, policy analysis, charts, diagrams, graphs, tables, fact sheets, reports, case studies or diary extracts.

4. To encourage writing skills, complete an assignment on any of the topics involving synopsis analysis, persuasive prose, opinion piece, counterfactual scenario or pamphlet.

5. To develop verbal skills, complete an assignment on any of the topics involving classroom discussion, debate, hot-seating or speech presentation.

6. To facilitate artistic skills, complete an assignment on any of the topics involving art, drama presentation, monologue, tableau, culture, creative writing, poetry, journaling, literature or poster.

7. For assignments outside the academic environment, take a field trip to a Burmese embassy, consulate, exhibition, museum or nongovernmental organisation (NGO), or participate in a letter-writing campaign on behalf of a Burma issue.
