Home Campaigns Stop Child Labour Resources
Why are children working?
The rules of world trade
The World Trade Organisation's inadequate rules controlling world trade which allow worker exploitation such as child labour.
Global economic deregulation
Unscrupulous companies which increase market share and profits by lowering labour costs through overworking, underpaying and exploiting child workers.
Suppression of trade unions
Where trade unions exist, child labour doesn't. Where trade unions are banned, there is no-one to protect the rights of workers, both young and old.
Governments in developing countries
Government spending on the military rather than primary education, inadequate government legislation and corrupt officials who benefit from child labour.
Indifference in the West
Politicians, some media and business council leaders who collectively treat child labour as a non-issue.
Poverty
Daily survival. Supplementing low family income. Repaying debts incurred by parents.
Lack of access to education
Where there is a lack of affordable, accessible and meaningful education, child labour is more common.
The International Monetary Fund
The IMF's Structural Adjustment Programs (SAPs) slash education spending in indebted countries and impose a ruthlessly competitive economic structure which pushes children into work.
