Trade-labour Linkage and the World Trade Organisation: potentials and pitfalls

Our world has arguably reached a level of social and economic integration never before seen in human history, with increased standards of living for many in northern industrialised countries and for a select few in developing countries.

Globalisation has largely occurred upon the backdrop of extensive privatisation of state owned industries; deregulation of domestic states' laws that govern international movement of capital, labour standards, and environmental protection; and buttressed by impressive innovations in electronic telecommunication, money transfer technology, advances in production systems, and transport technology. What role can the WTO play in advancing core labour standards globally? How can the WTO be transformed into a more democratic and effective mechanism to enforse labour standards?
