Gala Spring Ball and Silent Auction to support EduCompass

EduCompass is a project building local community responses to ensure children can get the nutrition and support they need to stay in school. EduCompass works in the Cape Flats, in the disadvantaged townships near Cape Town. EduCompass works with community members to assist children going to 14 primary schools in the Grassy Park, Parkwood, Steenberg and Retreat areas.

Thousands of children come to school hungry, and can't learn, so EduCompass makes essential additions to expand the government feeding programs, and teach communities about child nutrition. EduCompass works with communities to build support, counseling and coaching so vulnerable children are able to stay in school, and engage in health promoting activities. With vast unemployment and increasing health burdens, such as HIV and TB, many families face terrible poverty. Children who drop out of school and live on the streets are at risk of violence, abuse and addiction.

In August a delegation from the Maritime Union of Australia, in South Africa for a congress of the International Transport Workers' Federation was able to visit EduCompass.

EduCompass is registered in NSW as a non-profit organisation. Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA has an agreement with EduCompass in Australia and in Cape Town to send donated funds for this valuable community development child support project.
