Zimbabwean unions speak out for peace in Gaza13 January 2009Despite facing intense repression, unemployment, starvation, and cholera, unionists in Zimbabwe are offering their solidarity to working people under fire in the Gaza Strip. ZCTU Press Release: Continued attacks on Gaza unfortunate The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions, representing more than 300 000 Zimbabwean workers is perturbed by the refusal of Israel and Hamas to accept the UN Security Council Resolution calling for a cease-fire in Gaza. This refusal will only result in the loss of even more innocent civilians' lives. Despite receiving widespread international condemnation over its offensive, Israel has not stopped its military campaign. The ZCTU is deeply concerned by reports that there have been mortar strikes directed at school buildings full of people seeking refuge. More disturbing is the fact that aid and medical workers have been denied access to wounded civilians, aid workers and journalists. The ZCTU condemns in the strongest terms the clear violations of human rights occurring against innocent people, workers included. The ZCTU therefore, calls on Israel and Hamas to heed international calls for a cease fire to avert further loss of human lives. We also call upon the United Nations and the entire international community to keep on mounting pressure on Israel until a cease fire is achieved. Human life is sacred and the world cannot afford to watch and not act on the Gaza attacks.
