Teacher2Teacher Campaign

15 March 2010

This year, Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA has partnered with the Pakse Teacher Training College in Southern Laos. The college covers four provinces in the South of Laos, including Sekong province, which is overwhelmingly made up of ethnic minority groups with some of the worst educational outcomes in the country due to language barriers and remote locations.

Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA and the college both believe that in order for Laos to develop, the focus must move from simply making sure children attend school to ensuring they receive quality education and this means supporting teachers.

Each year, hundreds of trainee teachers go through the one or two year course and are then sent out into rural and remote areas. Many of these teachers are deemed to be 'non permanent' for the first one to two years, meaning they receive no salary.

Teacher2Teacher provides teachers a resource kit of teaching materials, such as pencils, a dictionary, mini-blackboards and chalk to improve the quality of education in Laos. The program will also develop a mentoring and support system for teachers sent into isolated rural locations, including an induction program for teachers to share their experiences and strategies of teaching.

To help us make this partnership with teachers in Laos successful and sustainable, Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA needs your help in this campaign, calling on Australian teachers to support their colleagues in Laos.

Mr Somxay, Head of Teacher and Educational Administration, has been working at the Pakse Teacher Training College for almost twenty years and sees the daily challenges. He knows that building the quality of education in Laos is the key to his country's future:

"in this day of globalisation we don't want to walk alone, help us and let us walk together"

If you wish to make a tax deductible monthly donation to Teacher2Teacher for as little as ten dollars a month or a one-off gift, please download the flyer below or call our office on 1800 888 674.
