Ninety percent of the buildings have collapsed. Many residents fled with just the clothes they were wearing and have lost everything. The weather in Yushu is cold and windy - overnight temperatures are around -5°C in April.

Tibetan Village Project has now arrived on the ground and began relief work. The urgent humanitarian need is enormous. It has been confirmed that more than 2039 people have died and an estimated 12,000 people were injured in the earthquake.

Tibetan Village Project (TVP) is a non-profit, non-political organization dedicated to promoting sustainable development while preserving the rich cultural heritage of Tibet. The Tibetan Village Project have implementing grassroots community development project in the area since 2001, their projects are around; primary healthcare, rural education, livelihood and income generation and ecotourism.

Work has already begun Tibetan Village Project volunteers from Xining arrived in Xining on April 15th and they are helping to coordinate local NGO's response and relief efforts.

Tibetan Village Project volunteers in Chengdu have begun to collect supplies and equipment. As of April 19th, two truck full of supplies and 15 volunteers left for Yushu.

Volunteers also being sent to the main hospitals in Chengdu where injured Yushu residents have been airlifted to. Those evacuated have no family of friends in Chengdu so much support is needed. More volunteers are needed to translate and assist as many of the injured were Tibetans from Yushu area that do not speak Chinese.

More Support is needed to continue emergency relief and for the post emergency phase

Currently the most urgent need is for effective toilets (most camps have none whatsoever), and clean water.

In the long term communities will need assistance rebuilding their homes and rebuilding their lives.
