Workers, NGO's and Artists unite for Workers Memorial Day in the Philippines

29 April 2010

On April 28th, the world once again commemorated Workers Memorial Day. On this day we remember the unsafe work conditions workers face everyday.

According to the International Labor Organization, around 2.1 million workers die each year because of work-related accidents and diseases, while 100,000 people die of asbestos-related diseases each year.

In the Philippines, Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA assisted it's local partner, the Institute for Occupational Health and Safety Development (IOHSAD) to commemorate this event by producing a three-story high mural on worker safety entitled "Paint the Town Red".

This project used graffiti art to popularise the issue of occupational health and safety (OHS) and asbestos bans.

By drawing the energy and dynamism of graffiti art, the issues are given a new angle for people to look into. The project is on top of a hill along a major road in the second largest city in the Philippines, Cebu City. The wall, with permission from the owners, is a massive 3-stories high and 50 feet wide.

You can follow the project from Day 1 on the web - A running update on the WMD 2010 Graffiti project can be found at www.iohsad.org/workers-memorial-day-2010.
