Update from Pakistan's relief efforts for flood victims

09 September 2010

Update as of 14th Dec - We have raised over $95 000 for our 'Pakistan Floods Appeal'.

Union Aid Abroa-APHEDA's donations are assisting our partner in Pakistan, the Labour Education Foundation (LEF).

Shortly after the floods hit in late July, the LEF combined with the National Trade Union Federation, the Qalandar Memon Labour Party of Pakistan, the Women Workers Help Line, and the Pakistan Progressive Youth Front to form a joint organisation called the Labour Relief Campaign (LRC).

This Labour Relief Campaign (LRC) is now providing assistance in four provinces of Pakistan. It started its support from Sibbi district of Baloachistan province and extended it to Nowshehra district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Rahim Yaar Khan and Muzaffar Garh of Punjab province and Moro, Hyderabad and Thatta districts of Sindh province.
LEF, through the LRC, is using the funds raised by Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA in Nowshehra and Charsadda districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Thatta district of Sindh province and Jaffarbad district of Baloachistan province.
They use these funds to provide food, drinking water and medicines as well as kitchen utensils, sheets to be used as bedding, and clothes.

Using their contacts with local trade unions, the LRC has established committees in each local community where they are assisting. They have ensured the participation of women in each local committee, to ensure that the needs of women and children are specifically addressed. This strategy of working through organizing local level committees to oversee aid distribution is resulting in smooth support to the affected families.

In the second phase of support, as the flood waters recede and the immediate emergency passes and people begin to return to their homes and farms, the LRC is planning to assist the rehabilitation of families in the areas they are operating with tools for repairing homes and farming tools.

Besides relief work, the LRC has launched a campaign on the political front to urge the government to change its budget priorities by pushing for the cancellation of Pakistan's external debt and cutting defense spending and to shift budget spending to rehabilitation of flood victims.
