2010 Study Tours
21 December 2010
Being part of an APHEDA study tour is a unique opportunity to meet the local people, further ones knowledge about international aid and development and understand the work of Australian Trade Unions through APHEDA.
Middle East
In its first study tour to the Middle East since 2002, we led a delegation of trade union officials and members to the region in March 2010. The Study Tour participants learned about the situation for Palestinian and Israeli workers and trade unions and visited our aid program with Palestinian refugees and communities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Lebanon. The delegation consisted of 13 participants, and visited Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and the Occupied Palestinian Territory (West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip). Following the success of this study tour we organised another one in July 2010. The second was attended by nine participants including three Members of Parliament and one Councillor.
Laos
In late October, eight keen APHEDA supporters from all over Australia participated in a study tour of Lao PDR, the first APHEDA study tour to the country since 2003. Beginning in Luang Prabang the group sailed North to Houei Xay then finished the tour in Vientiane, in time to join the Buddhist Lent celebrations. Along the way the group saw firsthand the work APHEDA and its partners do, such as skills training for women with the Lao Women's Union and occupational health and safety for manufacturing workers with the Lao Federation of Trade Unions.
Next year we will be running 3 study tours to the Thai-Burma Border, Middle East and Timor-Leste .
