This year we renewed our advocacy work with the Cluster Munition Coalition Australia (CMCA) - a group of Australian NGOs that support the international call to stop cluster munitions from harming civilians. We had previously been very active with the International Campaign to Ban Landmines.
- Refugees are welcome in Australia
As Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA works with refugees in the Thai-Burma border, Lebanon, West Bank and Gaza -- the poor treatment of asylum seekers and refugees in Australia has been of great concern to us. We have been an active voice in Australia's refugee movement - writing letters to MPs, organising union visits to Villawood Immigration Detention Centre, advocating for the rights of asylum seekers in the media, and participating in rallies.
We have continued our campaign for the need for a change in aid policy for Cross Border Aid on the Thai Burma Border. Internally displaced people and those living in Burma's conflict zones cannot access aid that is delivered via Rangoon. Aid that is delivered 'cross border' or via Thailand is the only way for these people to receive basic medical care and education services. APHEDA has represented this issue to politicians and AusAID and supported a fact finding trip of a senator to the Thai Burma Border early in 2010.
