When the European coloniser (Spain) pulled out in 1975, Morocco moved to annexe its southern neighbour. The UN brokered a cease-fire in 1991 but has so far failed to organise a referendum of self-determination. Over half the population live in refugee camps in the harsh Algerian desert, while the others, such as Aicha's family, live under the harsh and brutal Moroccan regime.
