The General Workers Union of Timor-Leste (SJTTL), a partner of Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA, has been successful in improving the basic working conditions of the workers at the Sigma SuperMarket in Dili.
Press Release from SJTTL
On 6 June 2011 after a 1 hour strike at the Sigma SuperMarket, Dili, the General Workers Union of Timor-Leste (SJTTL) successfully negotiated the re-instatement of 1 delegate and 2 members and improved occupational health and safety including access to toilets, air-conditioning in the toilets and hand soap.
SJTTL had been attempting to negotiate with management since 24 May 2011 when our delegate and members were dismissed for requesting staff unfettered access to the toilets and improved hygiene.
Management had been adamant that staff should only access the toilets after seeking use of the toilet key from the manager on each occasion and had refused to improve conditions despite meeting with the union twice on 24 May 2011 and attempted mediation by the Labour Board on 30 May 2011.
The unity shown by members and delegates through the strike compelled management to change their position and treat workers with dignity and respect.
