West Bank Sal’it Quarry strike enters second month

21 July 2011

Since June 16th, Palestinian workers in the Sal'it Quarry (in the Occupied West Bank) have been on strike. The workers, organized with the independent Israeli trade union, WAC-Ma'an, are demanding an end to exploitation and humiliation, and insist on signing their first collective agreement.

The strike began after the workers and the union approved a draft collective agreement which had been previously negotiated with management. Quarry management is now refusing to sign the agreement and is attempting to take advantage of the opposition of a small number of more privileged workers in order to break the union and avoid the agreement.

WAC-Ma'an and the workers demand that the agreement be signed immediately. If the agreement is not signed, the strike will continue.

The strike continues in the absence of any indication from quarry management that they are ready to sign the agreement and the workers have approached unions around the world to support their strike and help them stand up to the challenge.
