East Africa Famine Appeal - Please give generously

Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA is requesting donations to assist victims of the famine in the Horn of Africa. Donations will be directed to one of our Solidar alliance partners, the German Workers' Samaritan Federation, which is working in the area to provide relief, food, water and healthcare assistance.

Due to two years of drought and subsequent crop failure, many people in Somalia, southern Ethiopia, South Sudan and Djibouti have fled their land to seek assistance in refugee camps in Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda.

An estimated 11.3 million people are in immediate need of assistance and about 10,000 people a week are arriving at the giant Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya.

While we in Australia continue to debate the economics (and science) of climate change, the poorest and most vulnerable communities in developing countries - who produce almost no pollution - are suffering its worst impacts. The effects of climate change are causing the world's poorest to lose everything - including their lives.

These famine refugees are the true face of climate change.

Our partner in this appeal
The Workers' Samaritan Federation (Arbeiter Samariter Bund or ASB) is a historic part of the German trade union movement with a foreign aid program which works in the Horn of Africa with relief, food, water and healthcare assistance.

Funds raised by Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA will be sent to ASB to assist their emergency work during this famine. In the unlikely event that more than is required is raised, any extra funds will be used to assist ASB's long-term healthcare work in this region.

Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA has worked with ASB in the past. Along with Norwegian People's Aid, ASB was one of the main agencies Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA worked through after the tsunami in Sri Lanka.

Like Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA, ASB is a member of the Solidar alliance, a grouping of the trade-union based and secular aid agencies from Europe. Solidar is centralising its efforts in response to the Horn of Africa crisis through a joint fund to assist ASB's work on the ground.
