East Africa Famine Update

07 October 2011

More than 12.4 million people in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia are currently affected by the famine, which is the most severe food crisis of its type in the world for some two decades. Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA is supporting partner organisation, ASB Germany from the SOLIDAR network, in their work on the ground.

Update
Several SOLIDAR members have set up emergency relief actions in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Uganda in response to the famine caused by the current drought and its dramatic consequences.

More about the work of SOLIDAR member organisations

Arbeiter Samariter Bund - Germany (ASB)
ASB in Uganda
ASB has been working in Uganda since 2005, where it has permanent offices in several districts. From Ethiopia, ASB continued its assessment into Uganda which was also highlighted as a risk region for food insecurity due to the current drought in the Horn of Africa.

Most specifically, the Karamoja region bordering Kenya and South Sudan presents relatively high threats of food insecurity due to delayed and low-level rainfalls, and the structural lack of sustainable water harvesting capacity. This situation is all the more critical as it is likely to be aggravated by possible influx of famine refugees fleeing Western Kenya, increasing irregularities of the rainy season cycles and rising market prices.

Taking advantage of its expertise in livelihoods support and given its broad community based physical presence on the ground, ASB Germany in partnership with the SOLIDAR network intend to set up a drought and food insecurity risks reduction project in the coming months to support the population most at risk in the Karamoja region.

ASB in Ethiopia
ASB partnered with Islamic Relief to conduct a joint assessment in Ethiopia, which is estimated to affect 4.5 million in the country. They have started to provide support to reduce the consequences of the drought and related food insecurity, focusing on the management of malnutrition, capacity building of health institutions, logistic support, provision and distribution of water and livelihood protection through veterinary care and equipment.

Arbeiter Samariter Bund - Austria (ASBÖ)
ASBÖ is also intervening on the ground, in the Kenyan regions of Marsabit, Mandera and Turkana East situated in Northern Kenya, to provide food and safe water access for the populations most affected by the drought. Together with their local partners ACORD, KNEF and ARIDA, they work at household level, helping in the drilling of boreholes and the rehabilitation of existing water sources for animals.

Norwegian People's Aid (NPA)
Norwegian SOLIDAR member NPA is present in Ethiopia and Somalia since 1994, assisting with the provision of humanitarian aid and development assistance. In the Sool and Sanaag regions - remote areas between Puntland and Somaliland in northern Somalia, NPA works closely with local Somali civil society organisations, with whom they have developed strong and genuine partnerships over the years. In these regions forgotten by almost all humanitarian actors, NPA has become the face of the international NGO community and monitors the humanitarian situation within the Somalia NGO Consortium.

Since the drought food crisis stroke in Somalia, NPA has launched a fundraising call to reinforce support to their local Somali partners in Sool and Sanaag, where more than 20% of the population was already suffering from lack of water prior to the drought.
