ALP National Conference Fringe Event - Friday 2 December 2011

Together with AFTINET (Australian Fair Trade & Investment Network), we will be hosting a fringe event on the Friday night of the ALP National Conference 2011 in Sydney. The topic is the relationship between free-trade and corporate rights and workers' rights. ALL APHEDA SUPPORTERS & ALP CONFERENCE ATTENDEES ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND

CORPORATE RIGHTS OR WORKERS' RIGHTS?: Trans-Pacific Free Trade Agreements & Their Impact on Health & Workers' Rights

Pharmaceutical companies are demanding longer patent periods so they can charge higher prices for medicines for longer. Other business groups want corporations to have the right to sue governments for damages over public health measures like cigarette plain packaging. Business also opposes the inclusion of enforceable labour rights. Asbestos remains a major issue amongst many of our trading partners.

This seminar will explore how we can ensure that free
trade agreements:

• do not prevent workers and their families having access to affordable medicines;

• do not prevent the regulation of tobacco advertising or of other dangerous substances like asbestos; and

• include commitments to enforceable labour rights.
