ALP National Conference Fringe Event - Friday 2 December 201121 November 2011Together with AFTINET (Australian Fair Trade & Investment Network), we will be hosting a fringe event on the Friday night of the ALP National Conference 2011 in Sydney. CORPORATE RIGHTS OR WORKERS' RIGHTS?: Trans-Pacific Free Trade Agreements & Their Impact on Health & Workers' RightsThe Australian government is currently negotiating a Trans-Pacific Partnership Free Trade Agreement with the USA, New Zealand, Chile, Peru, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and Vietnam. Pharmaceutical companies are demanding longer patent periods so they can charge higher prices for medicines for longer. Other business groups want corporations to have the right to sue governments for damages over public health measures like cigarette plain packaging.
