Election of Community Representatives
The Committee of Management of APHEDA comprises of nine positions. The ACTU nominates five people who become members of the committee. The other four positions (referred to as 'Community Representatives') are elected at the annual general meeting (Elected members of the committee hold office for a two year term).

At the close of nominations for community representatives (close of business on Friday 9th December 2011), four nomnations had been received for the four available positions. In accordance with Rule 15(5) of APHEDA's constitution, the persons nominated shall be deemed to be elected at the AGM and a ballot will not be required.

The four nominees are:

Janet Giles

"I am the Secretary of SA Unions and a member of the SA APHEDA activist group. I am a teacher by trade but also have been an organiser, vice present and President of the SA branch of the AEU and the AEU federal deputy president. I sit on the ACTU executive and have been in my current position since 2003 which has allowed me the great joy of working across all unions and industries in my state. I have been a member and regular donor of APHEDA since Bill Mansfield gave an inspiring pitch at an ACTU training conference. It taught me that there is a huge capacity for membership and commitment for APHEDA lying dormant in the union movement that we need to tap in to. I seek this position because I want to help build APHEDA to be a stronger member and activist organisation and also enable members in South Australia have a better voice and connection with the work of APHEDA."

Janet has also visited APHEDA projects in Vietnam.

Liz Hannan-Farrar

"I have been a member of Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA, a donor and a volunteeer since 1997. I have been a member of the NSW Nurses Association since 1986. I have been a member of Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA Board of Management for the last six years. I would like to emphasise the value and knowledge that I have experienced and gained through my association with my fellow board members. Their deep commitment to the value of APHEDA'S core values, with the Executive Officer, Peter Jennings and APHEDA staff is to be commended. In these tough times APHEDA will stay strong, always aware of the value of its work in helping others in their struggle for self-determination and solidarity."

Liz has also seen first-hand APHEDA's work in Vietnam, Laos, Timor-Leste and the Thai Burma border. Liz also volunteered for four months with APHEDA in Laos.

Natasha Joyce

"During the devastation of East Timor in 1999 I was compelled to become active as a volunteer for Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA's campaign calling for UN Peace Keepers. Since that time, in order to build delegate training programs, promote Union Aid Abroad's work & increase membership & donations I have:
  • organised Union Aid Abroad fund raising events such as photography exhibitions, music festivals, workplace functions, trivia nights, street garage sales and the annual Melbourne Dinners, which combined have raised more than $25,000 for Union Aid Abroad projects;
  • set-up and trained a group of committed local activists working to highlight Union Aid Abroad's work throughout the union movement and broader community;
  • represented Union Aid Abroad at ACTU, Trades & Labour Council & other union conferences & training modules;
  • worked closely with Union Aid Abroad staff to apply a systematic and planned approach to encouraging union workers to join the organisation.
I am currently employed as an Industrial Officer by the Community Public Sector Union - PSU in Melbourne. I have worked for the CPSU for nine years, initially as a Field Organiser and then Lead Organiser."

Natasha also participated in the 2004 study tour to Timor-Leste.

Lynne Ridge
Lynne is a long standing member of APHEDA who has a commitment to the work of APHEDA and has promoted membership to NSWNA staff, members, associate members, friends and family. Lynne was Sandra Moait's (NSWNA) proxy between March 1997 until June 2003. Lynne has served on the APHEDA Management Committee since 2007 and is a current member of the APHEDA Marketing Sub-committee.
