Small Scale Fish Hatchery Project - Battambang Women in Development Centre
Thmar Kul district, Battambang Province
Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA has been working in aquaculture in Cambodia since 1991.
Project background
Over the past four years the fish farming and vegetable cultivation program was developed with Kampot Agriculture Department and transferred the program to 10 communes in four districts in four provinces:
- Dang Tung district in Kampot province
- Thmar Kul and Mong Russey districts in Battambang province
- Tbeng Meanchey district in Preah Vihear province
- O'Reang Ov and Tboung Khmum districts in Kampong Cham province
The program has been called the Agriculture Transfer and Nutrition Program (ATNP) and is in partnership with three Women in Development Centres(local agencies of the Ministry of Women's Affairs)and one local NGO. Staff of these four agencies have been provided with comprehensive technical training and training in farmer training methodologies.
Small Scale Fish Hatchery
More than 400 small farmers including more than 50% women have been trained in fish farming and vegetable cultivation through the ATNP since 2003. In order to supply these farmers with a viable supply of fingerlings (small fish) for breeding a pilot small scale fish hatchery has been build at Thmar Kul in Battambang Province.
The small scale fish hatchery was constructed between June-July 2006. It includes a reservoir tank, hatching tank, breeding tank, brood stock pond and nursing pond. There were some teething problems during the first hatching period which meant only 23,600 fingerlings were produced which is far short of the required amount for farmers. The reasons for this result stemmed mainly from the fact the hatchery was completed near the end of the hatching season; the electricity supply was cut to the site during the night when it was most needed causing the generator to over heat due to excessive use.
This year we plan to complete the final construction requirements for the hatchery and provide any further technical support needed. Expected outputs include: six farmers being trained in fish nursery operation, approximately 100 farmers trained in fish farming and organic vegetable growing, nutrition education and HIV/AIDS awareness and 200 local farmers have access to fingerlings.
