Aceh: Vocational Education Development
The loss of lives and devastation of physical infrastructure has resulted in the loss of skilled workers and opportunities for employment for the survivors. In a country with no welfare system, it is a matter of life and death to be able to generate an income to buy the basic necessities such as food and water.

Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA has the expertise to support the training of the survivors to gain new skills which are now required in the rebuilding of Aceh. This includes skilling brick layers and carpenters. Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA is now working with three local partners in Aceh - the People's Crisis Centre (PCC), KSBSI (Confederation of Indonesia Prosperous Trade Union), and the Trade Union Care Centre (TUCC). The achievements so far include:
- A detailed needs analysis of surviving workers carried out in Sigli and Lhokseumawe with the participation of KSBSI and TUCC members.
- Training of Trainers (ToT) courses have been held and 15 trainers (9 women) were trained in Lhokseumawe and 9 trainers (4 women) in Sigli. These trainers are now running vocational training courses in a number of skills areas.
- Women in Lhokseumawe and women in Sigli have been trained in six week courses in sewing, tailoring and embroidery. Men in Lhokseumawe have also been trained in three week courses in printing.
- With the support of the ILO, the BRR (the local Acehnese government authority) and the Association of Contractors, curriculum has been developed for short courses to train 50,000 masons and carpenters.
