Aceh: Health Care

With most of the affected population still housed in temporary accommodation such as tents and camps, the survivors continue to face health challenges. In addition, the number of work-related injuries have risen with the reconstruction work now being undertaken. Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA is funding the Aceh branch of the National Nurses Union (PPNI) to establish five health clinics and a mobile health clinic. These services reach out to over 46,000 people living in temporary accommodation.

Details of Treatment Provided:

The PPNI has established a health post in five different locations where tsunami survivors are living in tents or camps. Each health post is supported by eleven or twelve PPNI volunteer nurses and a volunteer doctor who visit weekly in rotation. The nurses work in two shifts. The morning shift is from 8:30-12:30 and the afternoon shift is from 14:00 - 17:30. The doctor is in attendance from 9:00-12:30.

The common complaints as recorded in the health posts are: respiratory diseases, diarrhoea, fever (malaria) and allergies.

The support provided by the PPNI to the tsunami survivors are as follows:

  • Medical treatment: Between 25-75 patients present themselves daily to the health post with medical complaints.
  • Community Health Education: In addition to providing medical treatment, the PPNI also organises primary health care information sessions in the camps. During these sessions, practical information on personal hygiene, sanitation and disease prevention is provided.
  • Toilet and well construction: As a primary health care strategy, the PPNI is also supporting the construction of safe toilets and wells. This will enable the people to have access to safe water for drinking and cleaning.
  • Mask distribution: Dust and smoke pollution are major issues in the Banda Aceh city area. The PPNI volunteer nurses distribute masks to motorists and the general public as a means to address the respiratory disease problem.
