Reconstruction in the aftermath of the Yogyakarta earthquakeEarly on the morning of 27 May 2006 an earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck Yogyakarta, a city on the densely populated island of Java. This earthquake destroyed more houses and left more people homeless than the tsunami that devastated the Indonesian province of Aceh in 2004.
The earthquake has claimed over 6,000 lives, and with around 46,000 people injured local medical resources have been unable to cope. Over 600,000 people have been left homeless and 400,000 of them remain in make-shift tents or without any form of shelter. The community is also now at increasingly high risk of disease, with recent reports of tetanus outbreaks amongst the injured. Indonesia is once again facing a humanitarian disaster of epic proportions. The ongoing need for humanitarian assistance and an estimated damage bill of over US$4 billion, means local NGOs in Indonesia are under-resourced to cope with the scale of need. Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA's Indonesian partner organisation, WALHI (The Indonesian Forum for Environment), has been active in providing immediate relief to the worst affected villages in Yogyakarta. WALHI is the largest forum of non-government and community-based organisations in Indonesia. Union Aid Abroad assisted WALHI in Aceh during the emergency phase after the tsunami on 26 December 2004 and continues to support WAHLI in the current community reconstruction process in Aceh. Based on its most recent needs assessment, WALHI's key objectives for relief in Yogyakarta are: 1. To provide accurate and timely information so that appropriate support can be sought from the public. 2. To facilitate the provision of emergency relief to injured survivors. 3. To provide basic needs for 1000 households (5000 people) for one month. This includes water and sanitation, medical support, logistics, and shelter. All money from Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA's Indonesia Earthquake Appeal will be sent to WALHI so that they can sustain their ongoing program of reconstruction.
