Laos

Overview

Laos is the poorest country in South East Asia. Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA is assisting the Laos Women's Union, the Vientiane Municipal Women's Union and the Laung Prabung Women's Union with a capacity building and vocational skills training program for disadvantaged women and men, to assist them gain employment and reduce poverty. Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA opened an office in Laos in early 2002 to assist development of this new program.

Ongoing support for the Lao Women’s Union (LWU)
In February 2006 Union Aid Abroad – APHEDA’s government (AusAID) funded project Training for Employment and Capacity Building 2001-2006 in Lao People’s Democratic Republic came to an end. Laos Vocational Skills Training for Women 2005 - 06 Donor Report

OH&S with the Lao Federation of Trade Unions (LFTU)
While the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) is primarily an agricultural society, there are extensive mining and logging industries and more recently, work has begun on a number of World Bank and Asian Development Bank financed dams across tributaries of the Mekong river which will provide electricity for sale to neighboring Thailand.The level of OH&S awareness, and enforcement of legislation in Lao is very low, and accidents and fatalities are common on these worksites.
