Bougainville: Vocational Education and Quality Tools
After 10 years of conflict in Bougainville and a five year peace process, an autonomous government has been elected in 2005 with Joseph Kabui as President. Union Aid Abroad congratulates the people of Bougainville on their success in emerging from this long and difficult process.
Vocational Training for ex-combatants

Union Aid Abroad has been supporting NGOs from Bougainville since 1996, particularly those from the Central region. Much rebuilding of physical and social capital is still required. Union Aid Abroad presently focuses on funding tools and equipment for vocational training. Usually the tools packages are valued at around $5,000. Vocational training centres are an essential part of rebuilding education opportunities and providing a future for young people, many of whom were denied schooling during the crisis. We work with and through the Bougainville Education Department, which oversees the training centres and provides an important communication link.
Centres that we have supported with tools and equipment have included:
- Aropanari Technical School (Central Bougainville)
- Arawa Carpentry School (Central Bougainville)
- Arawa Research and Training Centre
- Buin Special Training Centre (South Bougainville)
- Burutunoi Training Centre (North Bougainville)
- St Gregory's Training Centre (South Bougainville)
- Paruparu Education and Development Centre
