Although Vietnam is often considered one of the 'New Tigers' and has achieved considerable success in reducing poverty there remains some key development challenges. Poverty is increasingly concentrated in the Northern and Central Highlands as well as the Mekong Delta. Furthermore, worker's rights and occupational health and safety standards have not kept pace with market economy changes, meaning that a focus on labour regulation and its enforcement as well as strong unions are essential for Vietnam's development. International support is needed to assist this transformation and help achieve improved wages and conditions for Vietnamese workers.
Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA's programs aim to assist in the reduction of poverty and improve living and working standards for the Vietnamese people. Our current focus is on worker's rights, strengthening national, provincial and enterprise level unions, promoting genuine Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), HIV prevention and support to people living with HIV and their communities, anti-human trafficking, support to environmental conservation and responses to climate change, vocational training and gender equality issues.
APHEDA was recognised for its contribution to Vietnam's development when it was the first international NGO awarded the Vietnam President's medal in 1998 and the Vietnam Women's Union President's medal in 2004. In 2011, APHEDA was awarded a certificate of merit from the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL).
Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA maintains a country office in Hanoi with both Australian and local Vietnamese staff.
Strategy
Vietnam was one of the first countries to receive Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA’s support due to the enormous needs in the aftermath of the Vietnam War 1963-75 and the strong involvement of many Australian unions in the anti-war movement.
