Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA Honored in Women’s Emancipation Medal

01 October 2004

The medal presentation ceremony
The medal presentation ceremony

In March 2004, Union Aid Abroad APHEDA had the very great honour of being the first organisation in Vietnam to be awarded the Vietnam Women's Union Medal for "Services to Women's Emancipation". The medal was awarded for APHEDA's work in Vietnam generally and the Hai Duong province training is just one of the many programs we have supported to assist the wellbeing of women in Vietnam.

The Vietnam Women's Union (a mass organization of over 11 million members) is tasked by the government of Vietnam to represent and develop the rights and conditions for women and children in Vietnam.

The medal was presented to the Chairperson of APHEDA, Ms Sandra Moait, on 1 March in Hanoi by Ha Thi Khiet, chair of the Vietnam Women's Union and head of the National Committee for the Advancement of Women along with the Vice-Chairs, Nguyen Thanh Hoa, and Nguyen Thi Kim Lien.

Although there are many non-government organisations working for the advancement of women in Vietnam, no other international organisation has ever been granted this award.

Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA has been supporting projects in Vietnam since 1985 and with the Women's Union since 1989. With funding assistance from AusAID, many Australian trade unions (including MUA, NSW Nurses Association and the CFMEU) and individual donors, APHEDA has been working in partnership with the Women's Union in many provinces on a range of programs including micro-credit, health care and promotion, HIV, vocational training, income generation and in 2004 a pilot project in gender and public speaking training for women candidates in local government elections from 2 districts.

The ceremony was a symbol of solidarity, friendship and cooperation between APHEDA and the Vietnam Women's Union. Moreover it was an event of great significance for Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA Vietnam on the occasion of opening an office in Hanoi, from 1 January 2004 and the first visit of the new APHEDA Chairperson to Vietnam.
