Regional Seminar on Occupational Health & Safety07 April 2005The 3-day OH&S seminar brought together representatives from Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. It was co-hosted by Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA and the National Institute for Labour Protection (NILP) in Hanoi from 31st March – 2nd April 2005. It was the first time the trade unions from Vietnam, Laos and Thailand, their related NGO's and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) had shared their experience of OHS in this way. All the participating organisations are working with or supported by APHEDA in 2005. The participants were from the ILO, the Laos Federation of Trade Unions, OSHE Institute Bangkok (ICFTU/GUF), VGCL, NILP and APHEDA. The seminar provided representatives from LFTU and the OHSEI an opportunity to study the situation of OHS workplace training, law, research and inspection in Vietnam by the VGCL. The seminar also allowed an exchange of ideas, information and latest workplace research on OHS and developed areas of possible future collaboration between the organisations. Seminar papers will be compiled and published and available from the APHEDA Lao and Vietnam offices in May 2005. The seminar was funded by Australian unions, donations by individuals, AusAID and the NILP. Outcomes · All participants gained a good understanding of the different approaches to OHS training, research, law and inspection. · A new joint program on improving OHS was proposed in order to strength capacity for LFTU in particular and share experiences on training, research and inspection. · NILP will send staff to Lao to assist LFTU in the short term with the APHEDA supported project in Lao PDR. · The cooperation between OHSEI and NILP has also been improved with new activities now planned in 2005 including cooperation on factory audits. |
