Peddle Power – The Wheelie Wadical Workers!
15 January 2007
Who are the Wheelie Wadical Workers?
The Wheelie Wadical Workers are 12 unionists and union members from South Australia and NSW who cycled through Vietnam this January to raise money for Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA.
The trip
Starting from Hanoi in early January, the Wheelie Wadical Workers visited a vocational centre which APHEDA is supporting and saw Agent Orange survivors being trained in crochet and embroidery skills. They also sat in on a HIV/AIDS support club meeting and heard many personal stories which moved them so much that they passed the hat around and collected enough money to buy one of the HIV support club participants a xyclo.
The participants then headed south and began the cycling tour in Hue, central Vietnam. Cycling along the coast and through Vietnam's lush countryside, the Wheelie Wadical Workers visited sites of political, historical and cultural interest such as ancient temples and art galleries, before arriving at the coastal paradise of Nha Trang. After swimming and snorkelling at Nha Trang's white sandy beaches the tour headed up to the mountain retreat of Dalat with its cobbled streets, picturesque churches and spectacular waterfalls.
The tour finished in Ho Chi Minh City after 14 days and 500 kilometres, where the Wheelie Wadical Workers visited APHEDA projects in the city as well as exploring all of the other delights the city had to offer.
Fundraising
The Wheelie Wadical Workers raised close to $20,000 - all of which will be contributed directly to Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA. Fundraising activities have included:
- Trivia and games nights
- Raffles
- Lunches/dinners
