Gifts That Change Lives

$40  East Timor - Women’s literacy
This gift can enable two women from rural East Timor to attend a literacy training course. The gift of literacy can improve the women’s capacity to generate income for themselves and their families, enabling hem to participate in the economy and in the building of a new East Timor.*
Approximately two thirds of adult women in East Timor have never attended school. This is especially true for girls in rural areas who could not attend school during the Portuguese colonial era. Consequently, most rural women over 50 are funcionally illiterate. If these women are to share in the reconstruction and development of East Timor, now the Indonesian occupation is over, literacy and language training is essential.
Since 2001, Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA has been assisting a women’s organisation in East Timor, the Grupo Feto Foins’ae Timor Leste. GFFTL conducts literacy training and income generation training - such as sewing and tailoring or home based businesses - for disadvantaged women of East Timor.*
