This gift can provide enough fabric and materials to support the training of twenty women to make traditional Laotian skirts. The training is part of Union Aid Abroad’s strategy to help economically disadvantaged women acquire skills that can generate some income to support their families. Our partner in this poverty alleviation program is the Lao Women’s Union.*
$20  Laos - Women’s skills training

Laos is one of the poorest countries in South East Asia. The effects of many decades of colonialism, conflict and isolation and Laos’ slow integration into the global economy are still widely apparent. A legacy of the ‘Indochina War’ that ended in 1975 is that large areas of land still contain unexploded ordinances (UXOs). Life expectancy on Laos is just 56 years. Literacy is 77 per cent and almost one third of the population live on less that an US$1.50 per day.*
