Members of the Indonesian trade union KSPI have won a just transition clause in their collective bargaining agreement with PT AEL Indonesia, a multinational mining and chemical company that operates in East Kalimantan and South Kalimantan.

In light of recent remarks by President Trump suggesting U.S. ownership of Gaza and calling for the permanent relocation of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, we –the Australian trade union global justice organisation– see these proposals with utmost concern as they contradict international law and infringe upon the fundamental human rights of the Palestinian people.

Since October 2023, Union Aid Abroad – APHEDA has played a key role providing avenues for the Australian community to be informed on the situation in Gaza, demonstrate solidarity with the people of Gaza and offer meaningful financial support to aid efforts on the ground.

Governments everywhere must engage full diplomatic links to spell out the consequences of this approach to the US Government during this review period. The US cannot abrogate its global responsibilities, but if this funding suspension becomes permanent, then governments globally must be prepared to step in to fill the breach.

20 years ago, Union Aid Abroad–APHEDA established an office in Vietnam, a testament to the enduring solidarity between Australian workers and their Vietnamese counterparts. From supporting women leaders to promoting workers’ health and safety, the Vietnam office has been working hard.
