Phnom Penh: Based on communication by the Ministry of Information, the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) will stop using asbestos from 2025 to improve worker’s welfare.

During a meeting between H.E. Dr. ITH Samheng, Minister of Labor and Vocational Training (MoLVT), and H.E. Justin Kevin Whyatt, a new Australian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia, both parties discussed on some areas of work related to labor and vocational training in the morning of June 5 2023 at the cabinet office of the MoLVT. The two parties discussed reduction and moving toward prohibition or elimination of asbestos use in Cambodia.

H.E. Justin Kevin Whyatt said that asbestos in Australia has caused harms to workers, and even nowadays many people have suffered health problems caused by asbestos. In response, H.E. Dr. ITH Samheng stated that the MoLVT has been working hard on this area with an objective to ban use of asbestos from 2025. Currently, the RGC is raising awareness on this issue among ministries, institutions, partner organizations, enterprises, communities of workers, etc.
