Palestinian Women Seize Opportunities to Work in the West Bank

Apr 30, 2020

I was not used to leaving my home alone, but now since I come to work here it is accepted by my family.”

When women are given the opportunity to work free from discrimination, they can secure their own independence and develop their potential.

In the West Bank, Union Aid Abroad – APHEDA is working with a local business to help Palestinian women overcome the challenges of discrimination and restrictive social norms that prevent their participation in the economic life of their community.

Women in the West Bank often struggle to secure work, especially in rural areas due to high unemployment levels and the perceived domestic role for women. Rural women also face barriers to accessing larger markets further afield than their local community market.

But when women are given the chance to work, and when they are supported in accessing larger markets, they and their families, communities, and workplaces enjoy the benefits.

The women employed by the Jenin Investment Company – in an agreement between the business and Union Aid Abroad – APHEDA that promotes the status of women in work – have produced more than 20,000 kilograms of makdous, or stuffed pickled eggplants, for export to the consumer markets abroad.

One of those women told us:

“Even my children are looking at me differently, since I’m able to help them with their university education expenses.”

By working hand-in-hand to challenge discrimination and restrictive social norms, women in the West Bank are overcoming the barriers to full participation in the life of their community.

Union Aid Abroad – APHEDA implements this program under the ‘Ghalleh’ project in partnership with the MA’AN Development Centre, the Institute for Community Partnerships – Bethlehem University, and the Palestinian Businesswomen’s Association – ASALA.

This project is supported by the Australian Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
